We all know it’s important to make time for yourself. But if you had to answer the why of it, you might be stumped. However, the more you know about this important fact, the more likely that you will, in fact, make time for yourself.
You are important
Yes, the laundry is important. And yes, your family is important. But so are you. It’s easy to overlook this fact and the result is a complete lack of me time. When you don’t make time for yourself, you’re telling others, and yourself, that you are not worth as much. That your needs are not as high a priority as others.
While everyone’s needs shift in priority, if you continue to forget about yourself then you never get the space you need to fully recharge.
Strength in Rejuvenation
You can think that once everyone has been taken care of you’ll be able to finally find space for yourself. But has this really been true in the past? The better way to think is to put yourself first and the rest will follow. The natural reaction is to think of this as being selfish. But remember. If you aren’t running at full capacity, how effective are you, really?
When you plan the next month, schedule you first. Plan your spa visit or relaxation periods and only after those have been committed to, should you plan to help others. Once you make time for yourself you can rest easy knowing you have been taken care of. Then, you can put all your thoughts into helping the rest of the people around you.
Sub-par time
Especially for women, there lacks a distinction on what it really means to make time for yourself. You might think, great I have time in the evening to prep tomorrow’s meals. Or I can finally get around to hemming some pants. Or even time to clean the house. And while there might be a slight satisfaction in crossing these tasks off your list and organizing life’s chaos, are they really how you want to spend your alone time?
Women take on more household duties than men and this needs to be recognized. Your down time shouldn’t be just completing more chores. Rather, it should be a chance for you to do whatever you would like. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, playing on a sports team, or hanging with a friend, your leisure time should be just that – leisure.
Time is short
The final reason to make space for yourself is quite simple. Time is not infinite. You can think you’ll find some quiet space next week or even next month, but the truth is that time will run out at some point. You deserve to put yourself first, today.
