Society is all about looking as young as possible. Or is it anymore? While there used to be an emphasis on controlling every aspect about ourselves, there’s now a trend to appreciating what we have and who we are. In a bid to age gracefully, it’s important to accept who we are. Take some time for ourselves, and most importantly, love who we are. You are in charge of your own happiness.
Stop reading magazines
Have you ever picked up an issue of a magazine, plastered with amazing-looking celebrities? Have you scanned through the list of hottest women over the age of 50? If so, you’re probably left with the very grim thought that you just can’t compare to them.
Unfortunately, it’s true. You can’t compare to celebrities. Because they have a massive team that readies them for photoshoots, which are then edited and photoshopped. The pictures you see in magazines are not real.
But you are real. Give yourself a break. Do you spend two hours every morning with a hairstylist and a makeup artist putting you together? How about a fashion designer detailing your every look? No, you exist in the real life. You spend your life working and taking care of other people, and if you’re lucky, carve out a bit of “me time.”
So, if you really want to age gracefully, start by embracing who you are. It never pays to compare yourself to something not based on reality.
Invest in yourself
While your life is busy, make sure there’s a bit of time just for yourself. As women, we often put ourselves last, but the result is a path headed right to burnout. Find a support group around you and let them know your needs. A little communication can prevent a lot of problems in the future.
Drink lots of water, focus on healthy, balanced meals. But don’t forget to indulge every now and then. You only have one life, so make it a long one but a happy one.
Celebrate your life
You can look at your age and think, “ugh, how did I get so old?” Or, you can look at your age and think, “I’ve accomplished so much and am still alive.” Your perspective can really determine the remaining years of your life.
Think back on all your triumphs and tribulations. Relish in what you’ve accomplished. Take heart that you’ve survived troubles and setbacks. You become a different person as you age. If you’re still not sure how to age gracefully, simply think about what more you want to accomplish. Then, start acting on it.
There might always be tomorrow, but if not, do you want to have any major regrets? Take a chance, get out there, and enjoy what you have.
